Incoterms® 2020 rules address buyer and seller responsibilities for transport, costs and risk in sales contracts. These short orientation notes are not the official rules or a translation of them.
Any mode of transport
| Code | Key consideration |
|---|---|
| EXW | Goods await collection at the agreed seller location. |
| FCA | Delivery is to the buyer’s nominated carrier. |
| CPT | Seller pays carriage; risk passes at carrier handover. |
| CIP | Carriage payment is combined with seller-arranged insurance. |
| DAP | Buyer handles unloading at destination. |
| DPU | Seller handles unloading at destination. |
| DDP | Seller is responsible for import clearance. |
Sea and inland waterway transport
| Code | Key consideration |
|---|---|
| FAS | Delivery occurs alongside the ship at origin. |
| FOB | Risk passes when cargo is aboard at origin. |
| CFR | Seller pays freight; risk passes aboard at origin. |
| CIF | Freight payment is combined with seller-arranged insurance. |
Before contracting
Specify the place/port and edition year alongside the code. Under C terms, the freight destination differs from the risk-transfer point. Check insurance cover separately.
